South Korea’s largest e-commerce platform operator, Coupang Inc., has been named to LexisNexis’ list of the world’s top 100 corporate innovators for the second consecutive year, highlighting the company’s growing patent portfolio and technology investments as it expands its platform ecosystem.

The recognition comes from LexisNexis’ “Innovation Momentum 2026: The Global Top 100” report, which evaluates companies based on recent improvements in the strength and quality of their patent assets. The analysis draws on roughly 16 million patent records worldwide and applies a methodology based on the Patent Asset Index to measure how companies’ intellectual-property portfolios have evolved over the past two years.

Coupang operates one of the most extensive e-commerce and logistics networks in South Korea. Founded in 2010 and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021, the company built its platform around a vertically integrated delivery infrastructure that supports next-day and same-day fulfillment across much of the country. Beyond its core retail marketplace, the company also runs the streaming service Coupang Play and the food-delivery platform Coupang Eats.

The company’s patent portfolio has grown rapidly as technology development has become a central part of its strategy. Coupang held 91 cumulative patents in 2015. By the end of last year, that number had risen to 3,919, representing average annual growth of roughly 45%.

The company has secured 354 patents in the United States while expanding filings in other technology hubs. It recorded 933 patents in South Korea during 2024 and 2025 and has accumulated 1,132 patents in Taiwan since 2021. The number of employee inventors listed on patent applications reached a record 736 last year.

LexisNexis said the company’s patent portfolio spans a wide range of technologies and performs above industry averages in both citation impact and overall quality.

Many of those technologies are embedded directly in Coupang’s platform operations. Its retail network uses machine-learning-based demand forecasting and automated inventory systems to manage the distribution of millions of products. Coupang Play uses real-time server load analysis to maintain stable video quality during traffic spikes, while Coupang Eats applies artificial intelligence to calculate recommended cooking times based on restaurants’ real-time workloads.

Robert Porter, Coupang’s chief global affairs officer, said the recognition reflects the company’s continued investment in technologies aimed at reshaping digital commerce and expanding into new markets.

The announcement comes shortly after the company faced scrutiny in South Korea following a personal-data breach that exposed some customer information, prompting regulatory attention and calls for stronger data protection measures.

Despite the controversy, the company continues to receive recognition for innovation in its platform model. Last year, Fast Company ranked Coupang No. 2 in the retail category of its annual list of the world’s most innovative companies.
