Kia is taking a bold step to expand into the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market. The company has announced that its first EV specifically developed for India will be based on the Carens Clavis, a new premium multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). Industry observers are closely watching to see whether Kia can successfully balance affordability and advanced technology.
On May 8 (local time), Kwanggu Lee, Head of Kia’s India Regional Headquarters, unveiled the Carens Clavis at a new model launch event. During the event, he revealed that Kia’s first locally designed EV will be built on the Carens Clavis platform.
“The EV model based on the Carens Clavis will be offered at an affordable price,” Lee emphasized.
Currently, Kia sells its premium EV models — the EV6 and EV9 — in India, priced at approximately $64,000 and $120,000, respectively. These high price points have limited their appeal among mainstream consumers.
The Carens Clavis is a premium version of the Carens MPV, which is already enjoying strong popularity in India. Building on its design and spacious interior, Kia aims to create an EV that meets local consumer preferences while offering a more accessible price tag.
India’s EV market is still in its early stages. Although consumer interest is growing, the sector faces challenges such as high vehicle prices and a lack of adequate charging infrastructure.
Kia’s plan to introduce an affordable, locally adapted EV could mark a significant milestone in accelerating the growth of India’s electric vehicle market.
