A ‘green light’ has turned on for Samsung SDI’s clean power procurement. German solar company ib vogt has begun construction of a solar power plant in Malaysia, which will supply production electricity to Samsung SDI’s Malaysian facility starting next year.
According to ib vogt on the 6th, the company recently broke ground on a 29.99 MW solar power plant in Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia.
This project is part of the Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP), a scheme introduced by the Malaysian government to expand renewable energy usage among local businesses.
Under the CGPP in 2023, ib vogt signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Samsung SDI’s Malaysian subsidiary. After recently completing financing, the company began construction using bifacial solar modules. Once completed next year, the plant is expected to not only ensure stable power supply for Samsung SDI but also reduce carbon emissions by approximately 55,380 tons annually.
By utilizing clean power, Samsung SDI will operate its local factory and move closer to achieving carbon neutrality. The company joined RE100 (a global initiative committing to 100% renewable energy usage) in October 2022, pledging to transition all its domestic and international operations to 100% renewable energy by 2050.
Jeong Woo-chang, head of Samsung SDI Malaysia, stated, “We are actively working with various partners to secure clean energy and fulfill our commitment to 100% renewable energy transition. Participation in the CGPP is a significant milestone in these efforts, and we are pleased to play a key role in expanding solar power across the Asia region.”
