CMC, a Vietnam-based IT services company with Samsung SDS as its largest shareholder, is set to construct a hyperscale data center in Ho Chi Minh City. With an investment exceeding $12.5 million, the data center aims to contribute to Vietnam’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem and is targeted to begin construction next year.

According to CMC on July 16, the company received approval from the Saigon Hi-Tech Park (SHTP) Management Board on July 14 (local time) to build the hyperscale data center. A hyperscale data center is defined as one housing at least 5,000 servers with an energy consumption of around 100 MW.

CMC’s data center is initially designed with a 30 MW capacity, expandable to 120 MW in the future, with an estimated investment of $250 million.

To optimize performance, CMC plans to implement advanced technologies, including next-generation networks for stable connectivity and digital twin technology for real-time monitoring. The company also aims to enhance competitiveness by utilizing power from renewable energy plants, positioning it as an eco-friendly data center.

CMC views the hyperscale data center as a culmination of its expertise in cloud, big data, and cybersecurity. Upon completion, it is expected to serve as a critical hub for storing, processing, and analyzing vast amounts of data, meeting the growing demand for AI services. The project is seen as a significant milestone in realizing CMC’s long-term AI vision and establishing Ho Chi Minh City as a key hub for AI infrastructure.

According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology, as of March, the total capacity of data centers in Vietnam was 182 MW, with only one large-scale data center exceeding 20 MW. To achieve the government’s 2030 target of 870 MW, significant investment is needed. Viettel, a Vietnamese telecom company, is pursuing a 140 MW data center in Ho Chi Minh City, and with CMC’s project, the city is emerging as a focal point for data center development.

Nguyen Trung Chinh, Chairman of CMC, stated, “The CMC Hyperscale Data Center at SHTP is a foundation for Ho Chi Minh City to grow as a digital hub in Southeast Asia and a critical infrastructure for digital and AI transformation. Vietnamese companies will no longer need to export data overseas.”

CMC welcomed Samsung SDS as its largest shareholder (30% stake) through two investments in 2019. The two companies collaborate in various fields, including intelligent factories, cloud, security, smart buildings, content management services (CMS), AI, and big data. Last year, CMC established a subsidiary in South Korea, marking its entry into the Korean market.
